It’s official… the World Series Trophy is coming to the Star City.
“We were thrilled,” said World Jr. Biathlon Event Director, Jane Towle. “We think this is a great day for our event. The Red Sox think it is a great idea to be attached to an International event like we are hosting.”
The Biathlon will be in full swing on March 5th, and the World Series trophy in the city will add another layer of excitement. Organizers of the biathlon had already planned on having an awards ceremony at the Mall that evening and now, they’re making plans for a much larger event.
“We anticipate having a parade/escort down through the Main Street starting at UMPI and ending at the Mall,” said Towle. “We will have a Meet and Greet, photos that sort of thing for the community right at the Mall.”
Very early in the morning on December 18th 2004, the World Series trophy was on display at the Aroostook Centre Mall for about an hour and half and fans on both sides of the border stood in line to see the hardware.
“Bring it to Presque Isle and bring it to the Mall,” said mall manager Patti Crooks. “I am so excited about that, but the best part is we are tying it in with the Biathlon. So let those Biathletes realize how true New Englanders Red Sox Nation handles it all.”
Deputy City Manager Martin Puckett says this is great news for the County who are huge supporters of the City of Boston.
“We are very excited about this opportunity,” said Puckett. “Of course in many people’s minds this is much more than the title- it is about Boston Strong.”
The majority of the Sox grew beards during the run to the World Series and just before Christmas, Puckett started growing facial hair. He says tongue in cheek that must be the reason the Red Sox Organization decided to travel to the Star City with the trophy.
“Huge thing to do with my beard, but I don’t think it was a huge factor but I am happy to say it’s part of it.”
