The Washburn girls cross country team has high expectations for the 2013 season. They’re looking to become back-to-back Class C State Champions.
Coach Mike Waugh said, “We always cover fundamentals.. Making sure we get the right amount of mileage at the right time, stretching, injury prevention, all those things are key to winning another state title. So we need to do all those fundamental things to get there, but maintain our positive attitude and maintain our drive, and I think we can do it.”
The majority of the cross country team is back from last year… including senior Carsyn Koch. She’s a four-year member of the team, who’s looking for her fourth straight individual Class C title. It’s a feat that only two other female runners in the state of Maine have ever accomplished.
“I’m excited about what I’ve done so far and it’s just an exciting prospect to have won three times,” Koch said. “But at the same time, I’m really nervous for this year and I’m pressured to do well and perform, but I think that hard work will pay off and I’m really excited for this season.”
“Carsyn’s one of those people who’s got a shot at this,” Waugh added. “I just can’t wait to watch it happen.”
But to get another state title and/or another individual title, the Washburn girls have to work even harder than last year. But according to Coach Waugh, that’s not going to be an issue.
“When you have a combination of good drive and a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn and be coached, which these kids have, it takes you a long way.”
The Washburn girls compete in their first meet on Thursday, August 22nd at Greater Houlton Christian Academy.
