PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – University of Southern Maine students are protesting cuts and layoffs of faculty resulting from a budget shortfall.

About 100 students gathered outside the office of the provost Friday after about a dozen faculty members received layoff notices.

Flat state funding and declining enrollment contributed to a $14 million budget gap in the fiscal year that starts in July. Together, the University of Maine System schools face a $36 million budget shortfall.

The names and exact number of faculty members laid off Friday weren’t immediately available.

University of Southern Maine President Theodora Kalikow proposed eliminating four majors and to 50 faculty and staff positions last week.

Junior theatre student Ashley Rood tells the Portland Press Herald that she plans to transfer to a new school due to the cuts.
