The University of Maine Presque Isle soccer teams open the season on Saturday against Unity College. The teams began conditioning earlier this week and they are looking forward to kick off on Saturday. Alan Gordon is starting his 23 year as head coach.
” Excitement in the air here in Presque Isle. We got four strong returners coming back from last season. Probably the most exciting thing to go along with those four strong returners we have a very strong group of first year players. 12 new first year players from New York and Massachusetts and downstate.
The Owls know that a strong start will go a long way in getting them a berth in the US Collegiate Athletic Association National Playoffs in November
” We probably need to get 11 or 12 wins on the season to get that qualifying berth. i think with this group of guys if they come together the way they have in the first week we will have a great shot of making the playoffs.”
The Lady Owls are also preparing for Saturday. Coach Trevor Parent says the team has a nice mix of veterans and newcomers
” We are excited it is just a matter of preparation paying attention to the details, getting everyone on board. We have a great recruiting class and a great returning class. The returners are very well complimented by the first year players and transfers. We have several All State selections. It’s always nice to add talent to an already talented team”
The Ladies team is looking to improve and peak late in the season with a conference tournament the prize at the end of the year.
” We are automatically going down to the NCAA’s in the GSAC playoffs. We are playing for a conference championship in the Great Southwest Conference. When we finish the way we finished last year as a program we are going to be set for great successes in the near future.”
The Owls play Unity College on Saturday and St Thomas New Brunswick on Sunday
UMFK opens the season Saturday at Vermont Tech and then will play Holland College on Monday.
