A stroke takes place when blood flow to a part of the brain stops. The effects of this can range from minor weakness on one side to paralysis or even death. According to Dr. Joel Fuhrman, a family physician and nutritional researcher, the number of stroke cases in the U.S. is rising dramatically, so he says prevention is key and one of the best ways to prevent a stroke is through nutrition. He adds that “the foods strokes are linked to obviously are sweet drinks, like soft drinks and soda and sugar and white flour. Also the whole diet with a high meat high sugar diet increase stoke risk. Where a high vegetable diet, g-bombs, greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries and seeds…will reduce your stroke risk. So remember more fruits and vegetables, less meats and sweets.”
That doesn’t mean you have to eat bland or boring meals. Furhman says that “excellent nutrition can taste great! It’s not about giving up taste and pleasure in life…It’s about getting a better life and retraining the taste buds to like natural foods and learning other ways to cook to make it taste delicious too.” And Fuhrman says a healthier diet wont just protect against stroke…eating more fruits and vegetables will also help prevent a lot of other diseases, like heart disease or cancer. He says “it isn’t one diet protects against cancer and another diet protects against stroke. It’s the same vegetable rich diet protects against all these different diseases that are linked to our poor diet in America.”
Furhman says that people have a lot of rationalizations as to why they shouldn’t change, but he says they don’t hold up against the consequences of not changing your diet. He adds that just by making a few simple changes, you will not only help prevent diseases, but also provide a better quality of life for yourself in the future.
