Maine health officials say they’ll appeal a decision by the federal government to cut $19 million from a state-run psychiatric hospital.
The health department said Thursday that it was notified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services of the decision to terminate Riverview Psychiatric Center’s federal funding. That’s about half its operating budget.
The facility had been in danger of losing funding for several weeks due to issues like overcrowding. But the state thought it was back on track because CMS in August had accepted its plan to correct those problems.
CMS is now citing other problems, such as sharing staff across two of the hospital’s units.
The state says some issues have already been corrected and that stripping funding will jeopardize patients.
