Standoff in Harrington Comes to an End

| November 21, 2013

A six-hour standoff at a house in Harrington ended peacefully tonight when the two men inside the home surrendered to State Police.  Both have been charged with criminal restraint.  Under arrest are 60 year old Elliot Robinson and his 78 year old father, Vernon Robinson.  The two are charged with preventing the matriarch of the family – 84 year old Elva Robinson, from getting medical treatment.  Mrs. Robinson is under adult protective custody of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services for treatment of long-term illnesses and the men did not want her to leave the house.  She was taken to the Machias hospital after the standoff ended about 6:15 p.m.

The younger Robinson had threatened violence if state officials attempted to remove his mother from the house, which prompted the response of the State Police tactical team. The men surrendered after talking to State Police negotiators on the telephone for most of the afternoon in a series of calls. Both will be taken to the Washington County Jail.
