Washburn Girls Looking For Fourth Straight Gold Ball

| December 5, 2013

The Washburn girls begin their quest for a fourth straight State Title tomorrow night when they host Hodgdon. The Beavers head into the season knowing teams will be gunning for them, but Coach Diana Trams says the team can’t wait to hit the hardwood

“We have high expectations for the season this year and it’s great to work with girls to build from where we finished last year. Some of the youngers players are going to see more minutes this year and we are expecting a good season.”

The Beavers will be without McKenzie Worcester for a few games because of a hand injury and Lanie Mettie who saw some big minutes last year was injured during the soccer playoffs is sidelined . The coach said the team is always looking for improvements .

” This year for us we have to make sure we rebound the ball. That was something we wanted to improve upon from last year.  We can run and score points in transition but we need to focus a little bit more in our half court set and our offense.”

Team members are focused on winning that fourth straight gold ball and that would put the seniors in very elite company winning four Gold Balls in their careers

” That is the long term goal this season. We are going to break it down into  small increments one game at a time. Things we need to improve on each game and the ultimate goal is to win a fourth State title.”

The Beavers have won 22 straight games and are considered the odds on favorites to roll to the tournament. Trams said that she doesn’t think the team will get complacent. They will challenge  themselves to keep getting better.

“The girls are competitive by nature and so individually they challenge themselves. The feed off one another so that is a great thing they have of great team chemistry. We will continue to work and build on that.”
