Mitch Worcester Adjusting to Division One Basketball

| November 26, 2013

It’s been quite an adjustment for UMaine basketball player Mitch Worcester… going from playing every game for the class D Washburn Beavers to being a redshirt freshman on the Division 1 UMaine men’s basketball team. It’s a decision he says was a pretty good one.

“I think it’s for the better good,” said Worcester. “I wouldn’t get much playing time this year anyways. Zarko’s in front of me and he shoots it lights out!”

But just because he’s not traveling with the team, doesn’t mean he’s not taking this year seriously. Because when the men’s team is on the road, Mitch is working on his game.

“I’m in the gym mostly every day, especially when the team travels,” said Worcester. “I got nothing better to do, and then lifting four days a week. Getting that opportunity… you really just have to work every day and prove yourself. I try to make it like, okay, I can’t play in games… practice, that’s my game.”

And just being a part of the black bears team is what he’s been working for- since playing for the black bears is a lot different than playing for the beavers… especially when it comes to practice.

“A lot more physical,” said Worcester. “You go from one thing to the next all the time. It’s no breaks, two hours straight. Practices are a lot longer in college than in high school.”

But while practices are different, one thing has remained the same; his love for the game.

“It’s a lifestyle,” added Worcester. “Gotta love it.”
