Three Aroostook County people who have made significant contributions to athletics and sports in the County will be honored by the Maine Sports Legends on Sunday October 13th . Long time Fort Kent Ski Coach Ben Paradis, Caribou Recreation and Parks Director Kathy Mazzuchelli and Murray Putnam long time Athletic Director and Coach at Southern Aroostook School will all be inducted into the Hall of Honors during the ceremony in Waterville. Over the next week we will talk to the three inductees.
Murray Putnam is at home on a baseball field. He is walking around the Houlton baseball field a place he spent a significant amount time on while growing up
” During my high school days this field was used by the Houlton School System, and by both Ricker Classical Institute and Ricker College. There was a ton of baseball played on this field and at that point a fair amount of summer ball also. This setting has a special meaning to me.”
The veteran educator, coach and Athletic Director spent most of his career in Dyer Brook at Southern Aroostook. Putnam coached baseball for 44 years winning 10 Eastern Maine titles, 5 State Titles and also captured a State Babe Ruth championship with players from the Southern Aroostook and Woodstock area Putnam has received several honors over the years including being an inductee in the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame . He said many thoughts will be going through his mind when his name is announced on October 13th
” I would reflect in my own mind on being in the Athletic Arena for so many years. Also to reflect on a good number of others from the County who have been honored in the past.”
Putnam says it is more then wins and losses. He enjoyed working with the hundreds of players who wore the Warrior uniforms over the years
” I take great pride in where I come from. Right here in Aroostook County. The thousands of folks both colleagues and in athletic circles and other school systems. Certainly the youngsters I have had the good fortune to coach. They have indeed had a profound effect on my life. and I am grateful for that”
