Houlton Boys Coming Off Gold Ball Season

| August 15, 2013

The Houlton boys soccer team is busy preparing for their first game on August 27th. They’re coming off a very successful season… One that featured an Eastern Maine title and the school’s first Class C Boys State Championship. But just because the squad brought back a gold ball last season, doesn’t mean they’re automatically bringing another one home.

“Are we gonna become state champions? We don’t know,” Coach Michael Carlos said. “Do we have the possibility? Well everyone at the beginning of the season has the possibility. All we’re going to try to do is rise to the occasion.”

According to Coach Carlos, the squad isn’t much different than last year. While some seniors graduated, the team is well stocked with returning players and new faces.

“Our philosophy here has been to build a machine. So that we have replaceable parts. There’s guys that didn’t start last year that played a lot of minutes, that are now gonna play even more minutes,” Carlos stated. “So, either they’ll rise to the occasion or they won’t. If they don’t, then there’s a guy behind them will take their place. We’re not looking for super stars, we’re looking for teammates. And hopefully, we found some teammates.”

And while grabbing another state championship would be ideal, the team isn’t focusing on the gold ball. They’re instead, focusing on playing as a team and improving every game.

“When you want to achieve something, no matter what you goal is, you’ve gotta go out and work at it,” Carlos said. “And that’s what I’m trying to teach these kids- to get out there and work toward their goal.”
