CAHS Cheer Team Brings Home 11th State Championship

| February 11, 2014

It’s been quite the season for the Central Aroostook cheerleading team. Despite having its ups and downs- the squad grabbed the first ever cheer sportsmanship award and a Class D State Championship.

“It’s fantastic,” said Senior Alexis Bradbury. “It’s probably the best feeling in the world.”

Megan King/CAHS Senior: “You hear Central Aroostook and it’s the best moment ever,” added Senior Megan King.

Winning has come natural to the team and to the program– winning 6 state championships in the last 7 years. Something that’s not so easy, especially when it comes to the competition.

“Every year it gets harder and harder to win because teams are coming, for you,” said Coach Sami Alenn. “They know what we’re going to bring every year.”

But the Panthers came out with a State title- one that happens to be pretty unique.┬áThis year’s State Championship trophy gave Central Aroostook their 11th State Championship– that’s the most any school’s cheer team in state history has ever won. But to win a trophy, a lot of dedication is required. The squad’s 16 cheerleaders practiced 18 hours a week to perfect everything about their routine- regardless of any obstacle that came their way.

“It doesn’t matter if they had a sprain- they were gonna be taped and just keep going,” said Allen. “My 2 kids with concussions- they stayed off their cell phones, they stayed off computers, and tried to get back as soon as possible.”

And for them, that dedication paid off. But the cheerleaders say they couldn’t have won a State Championship if it wasn’t for the two people who pushed them everyday… their coaches.

“We’re tight. We’re a family. That’s what makes us special,” said Assistant Coach Janice Mosher.

“They make sure that we’re okay, they make sure that our grades are fine, they’re basically like second parents to us,” said Bradbury.

King added, “Sami and Janice are the best coaches ever. I couldn’t ask for anything better.”
