Smith and Wesson will have to lay off some of its employees in Houlton in the near future. In fact 37 jobs will be lost as the company says its making some changes. The reason for the lay-offs are due to the increase in their precision machining capacity. Between now and August of next year they plan to shift several manufacturing processes from Houlton to their Springfield location and those processes will be replaced with more automated machinery. However, they will be offering training opportunities and other assistance as they transition.
