CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine (AP) – Officials say a Husson University student died after skiing off a trail into trees at Maine’s Sugarloaf resort.
Carrabassett Valley Police Chief Mark Lopez says the ski patrol and an ambulance crew performed CPR before 21-year-old Stephen Colvin was pronounced dead Tuesday morning.

Colvin, from Hoosick, N.Y., was skiing with fellow members of the Husson football team.

Lopez said Colvin, who wasn’t wearing a helmet, lost control on the black-diamond Hayburner trail and struck several trees in the woods. A LifeFlight helicopter was activated and was canceled after he was pronounced dead.

The last time a skier died at Sugarloaf was January 2012.

John Diller, Sugarloaf’s general manager, said the entire community extended its sympathies to the family. He said “a loss like this is felt throughout the community.”
