Let’s face it, your car takes a beating during the winter, so it’s important to have your car checked over to make sure everything is running properly before the brutal winter months hit. Charlie Michaud, the Service Manager at Percy’s says there is a list of things you can do to make sure your car is ready.
“The first thing you would want to do is make sure your antifreeze is strong enough for at least 30 below zero. Make sure that you have tires that are adequate enough for the winter as far as snow tires for snow and ice. You want to make sure you have new wiper blades, or fairly decent wiper blades for this winter. Make sure your oil change and your air filter has been kept up. When it’s cold it makes it hard to start with a dirty air filter.
Your car’s oil should be changed every 3000 miles. It is not something you just do for the winter months, but should be kept up year round. Pat Kinsey the Installation Technician at VIP says many customers come in the shop this time of year to get new tires.
“A lot of people run studded tires, and this day and age especially up here with the icy roads it really helps. We have a lot of people who run standard tires, and they go to studded tires, they notice a huge difference. The traction is just so much better. It’s a little bit of a softer rubber so it grips better.”
Both Kinsey and Michaud agree that studded tires are important for the winter, rather than just running a standard tire. Along with making sure your car is running properly for the winter months, and having the correct tires, you should also make sure you carry certain items in your car just in case of emergency.
“Safety kit, gloves, a rope, a chain”
“A small shovel, a blanket just in case you go off the road you have something to keep you warm until help comes”
So now that your car is properly winterized, it will perform better in the snow. Drive safe this winter.
