Portland Man Arrested on Drug Charges

Portland, Maine- May 2, 2014- The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency announces the arrest of Danny Mitchell 48 of Portland, for Class D Unlawful Trafficking in Schedule Z Drugs (Marijuana).

On April 29, at approximately 4:00pm, agents from the Cumberland District Task Force were conducting an operation in the 700 block of Congress Street. Unrelated to the operation, agents observed Mitchell exit the Wellness Connection of Maine, a licensed medical marijuana dispensary and meet with another man in a nearby parking lot. Mitchell was observed by agents exchanging his medical marijuana for money with the man. Mitchell then returned to the Wellness Connection of Maine where he purchased more medical marijuana.

Mitchell was stopped on State Street where he attempted to conceal his identity by providing a fictitious name to officers. Mitchell, who was on Probation, was in possession of a valid prescription for medical marijuana enabling him to legally purchase medical marijuana from a licensed marijuana dispensary for his own use.  Mitchell was transported to the Cumberland County Jail where bail was set at $5000.00 dollars, unsecured.

The man who purchased marijuana from Mitchell was stopped in the 800 block of Congress Street. The Massachusetts man told agents he traveled to Maine in order to purchase Marijuana at the Wellness Connection of Maine; but did not have a valid prescription to do so. The man agreed to purchase marijuana from Mitchell who he had just met while at the Wellness Connection of Maine. Mitchell instructed the man to meet at the nearby parking lot to conduct the transaction. One gram of medical marijuana was seized from the man and he was released.
