The University of Maine Presque Isle women’s basketball team is off to a perfect start. The Owls are 5-0 and first year coach Doug Carter says he is excited about the way the team has come together.

“We are playing good basketball and that was the goal. It’s great that we are undefeated, but it was more about playing good basketball and putting forth an effort that the campus community would be proud of.

The Owls began practicing back in mid October and from day one Carter has stressed Championship mentality and that is paying off as the team is buying into the system

“Earlier in the season we talked about getting that snowball rolling. I think we are starting to get that and that the community will get out and come see us and some local gals will be even more interested in talking to us about possibly joining us.”

The Owls have five ladies from the County on the team, Amanda Hotham and Sydney Churchill of Fort Fairfield Olivia McNally of Sherman, Becca Campbell of Washburn and Katie Patenaude of Presque Isle

” It’s a Northern Maine team. That is what we are about.  and hopefully we continue to  get the local gals who want to be committed and passionate about playing basketball on campus.  We are building something special.”

Carter knows its a marathon and not a sprint. The team plays three more home games this week and then will be off until January and the toughest part of the scheule as they look to get playoff ready.

”  The championship mentality we are trying to  develop with our players. We are shooting to win championships. It is a marathon and our marathon is in February when we get a chance to play for an NCAA Tournament bid.”
