A petroleum sheen was discovered Monday on the Aroostook River near the Caribou Dam.
According to Nick Archer of the Department of Environmental Protection, the oil discovery was at a culvert that dumps into the river just downstream from the dam. He adds that it was coming from the storm water system and not the city’s sewer system. Caribou Fire and Caribou Public Works were dispatched to put down some containment booms until the D-E-P arrived on scene late Monday afternoon. It’s not known yet where the source of the petroleum originated, but right now doesn’t appear to be significant.
