State police have been working around the clock trying to piece together what happened in Oakfield Monday; now one day later State police have charged 32-year-old Matthew Davis of Houlton with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of an Oakfield couple early Monday morning. A tragedy that has completely stunned the small community.
The Owner of Katahdin Forest Products David Gordon says, “I think this might be the first murder in the town’s history period. No ones ever seen anything like it around here.”
Gordon is the owner of Katahdin Forest Products in Oakfield, where the crime scene apparently began. But it was nothing compared to what came next: firefighters found the body of 51 year old Michael Kitchen and the second body presumed to be 49 yea old Heidi Pratt at a home on Oakfield-Smyrna Road while responding to a fire at the house early Monday morning. An autopsy revealed Kitchen died from multiple gunshot wounds and an autopsy on Pratt is still pending.
The Owner of Katahdin Forest Products David Gordon says, “It’s difficult for all of us, you know when something happens like this in a little small town it rocks everybody’s foundation.”
According to state police, at this point in their investigation there is no known connection between the deceased couple and Matthew Davis; who worked as a carpenter in Houlton. Davis is also the suspect in the 3 fires that took place Monday morning: one at the Oakfield home of Pratt, the Katahdin Forest Products Facility in Oakfield, and a boat launching ramp nearby Island Falls. Davis will appear in Aroostook Superior Court at 11:30 on Wednesday morning.
Matthew Davis does have a criminal past; including an OUI charge in 2011 and a game violation in 2010. There were rumors that Davis has previously worked at Katahdin Forest Products, but the owner says that is not true.
