An Aroostook County fire chief was recognized this afternoon for his tireless efforts in improving the safety and well being of the people of the North Lakes region in Aroostook. Chief Darren Woods received the Liberty Mutual Firemark Award today. The award is presented to firemen across the country who best represent their communities and who best demonstrate the firefighter’s selfless spirit. Woods has overseen the rehabilitation of three local fire stations vital to the community and has helped them become more efficient and ever ready. Under Woods’ direction, his team exceeds the call of duty by aiding other towns when assistance is needed.
Woods: “It’s an honor to me because people say the chief did this or the chief did that. The chief is the lead, but if the crew won’t follow you, the chief can’t do anything.”
Longo: “Chief Woods, known locally as Darren, has been a tireless advocate for the North Woods Fire Department and Aroostook County as a region as a whole. ”
As a Firemark Award winner, Woods will also be considered for the 2014 National Firemark Award in which two winners will each receive a $10,000 grant for their fire departments from Liberty Mutual.
