The trick to moderate consumption of Halloween treats

It’s Halloween: there’s tricks and PLENTY of treats. Even though everyone likes to indulge in chocolates and candies on Halloween; having too many sweet treats can do more harm than good.

From Candy Corn to M&M’s, to Reese’s and Twix; there’s all kinds of candies to choose from on Halloween to get your sweet fix.

Kayla Demoura says,  “My favorite Halloween candy is Almond Joys.”

But too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. And nothing is more tempting than bags full of free candy. The amount of candy consumed on Halloween can be downright SCARY. In fact, studies say almost every kid in the U.S will eat candy on Halloween and half of adults will too.

Registered Dietitian of TAMC Nicole Doughty said,  “The best thing when thinking about Halloween is making sure that we don’t over-do it. It’s like anything else, you know you have the bite size but if you eat 10 of them it will accumulate to a lot of calories so you have to be very careful of how much you actually take of those chocolates.”

The key is moderation; spreading out the joy instead of eating large quantities in one sitting. But to keep extra pounds at bay; eating sweets needs to be a once in a while treat.

Registered Dietitian of TAMC Nicole Doughty said, “Those little chocolate bars are about between 60 to 80 to 100 calories, so if you have one or two every night it can actually make a big difference with your weight.”

Studies say about 4% of all candy consumed in the country occurs on Halloween night. And though one day of indulgence won’t do too much damage- it’s still important to make conscious choices.

Registered Dietitian of TAMC Nicole Doughty said,  “Having too much chocolate if you don’t have diabetes it’s not like it’s going to hurt you at that one time it’s just if you do it all of the time then you’ll start having a lot of calories and then it can obviously bring excess weight. Enjoy your Halloween night and still go trick or treating, think about chocolate and candies but also about activities and exercise and make it a fun night:”

Starting tomorrow most stores like Walmart will sell Halloween Candy at 50% off. But be careful- eating just one 100 calorie candy a day can lead to a 10 pound weight gain over the course of a year.
