Stay Safe on the Roadways this New Years

| December 31, 2013

New Years Eve is a time for celebration and being together with family and friends. It can also be a dangerous time on the roadways if people don’t follow the law. Many people will go to parties that involve alcohol, and Deputy Chief Laurie Kelly says it is important to be smart and have a plan.

“The more you drink the harder those choices are to make. We really ask people to make a plan ahead of time. Maybe even have someone who is a designated driver. Somebody in the group who kind of watches out for everybody else. Just some plan to get yourself home safely because that’s our ultimate goal,” says Kelly.

Kelly says this is a fun time of year, but keep in mind you could change someone’s life forever in a negative way if you decide to drink and drive.

“We want everyone to survive their holidays. ┬áIt’s a celebratory time, and we’d like it to remain that way. We want people to be happy and have a good holiday and make it home safe,” says Kelly.

Police will not only be looking for OUI’s, but also failure to wear a seat belt, texting while driving and anything else that breaks the law. Being smart and making good choices this New Years, can not only save your life, but the lives of others on the roadway.

“We just want everyone to have a happy and healthy new year and continue that all year.”
