Current and future students of Northern Maine Community College have something exciting to look forward to.  A new Wellness and student center will be opening and in the meantime, preview tours are being held to show the progress.

Those involved with the new Rodney Smith Wellness and Akeley Student Centers are touring the facilities frequently to see the progress.  It’s a chance to see the evolution of the buildings which are getting close to completion.

Barry Ingerham, the Director of Physical Plant and Technology at NMCC says, “there’s been a lot of people involved from the design team right from the beginning, we’ve had external community groups.”

There has also been faculty, students, and the group managing the project along with contractors and sub contractors going through to check it all out.

Vicki Smith is the former chair of Community College foundation, she says,  “the lighting that is coming in to the exercise area into the wellness center is just it’s wonderful it’s just so bright and cheery in there.”

The construction of the two buildings will provide a weight room, a room for group exercises, locker rooms, and a classroom for instruction. The student center will have a college store, health center, and an office for student organizations.

Smith also adds, “cant wait for it to ope it’s such a great enhancement to the college and to the community.”

Ingerham tells us that by directing the tours, people have been telling him how excited they are about the project and how much space it has.

Ingerham, “and also they’re starting to get an idea for what it’s gonna be used for and how people – students and faculty and the community can use this space.”

The construction is on schedule and the anticipated opening date is in April.
