| October 22, 2013

A standoff took place in Amity on Tuesday. State police say the man responsible has surrendered.

Lieutenant John Cote of State Police Troop F said, “Our first contact began last night, shortly after 7 pm when we were contacted by a party that notified us that they’d been threatened at gun point by a suspect. This doesn’t relate to any hunting these parties were known to each other.”

A domestic dispute lead to a day long standoff on Monument Road in Amity. On Tuesday 65 year old Gary Knapp was charged with threatening his brother Larry Knapp with a dangerous weapon. Officers responded to Knapp’s small camper off the Monument Road in the woods Monday night, but due to the darkness, made a return Tuesday morning.

Lieutenant John Cote of State Police Troop F said, “Attempted to make contact with the suspect here in attempt to take him into custody for criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, initial contact was made, he refused to come out, was not cooperative, was indicating he was still armed.”

State Troopers established a perimeter around the property and called in the assistance of a tactical team. They used a PA system to negotiate with Knapp to get him to come out of the camper.

Lieutenant John Cote of State Police Troop F said, “Eventually after about 90 minutes he came out of the residence on his own unarmed and surrendered to members of the tactile team.”

Gary Knapp was taken to the Aroostook County Jail, and Lieutenant Cote anticipates his initial court date will be in Houlton within the next few days. Knapp surrendered around 3 pm this afternoon. Fortunately, nobody was injured during the police standoff.
