I’m here at the Crow’s Nest where the Presque Isle Career Center is holding its job fair. 33 employers have shown up to help people find employment.
Within the first thirty minutes of the job fair, over thirty people signed in and scoped out potential employment. Jenna Spoto a Career Consultant at the Presque Isle Career Center, says they hold two job fairs a year. One in the Spring and one in the Fall. One to two hundred people usually attend. These job fairs are meant to be beneficial to people seeking employment.
Jenna Spoto says, ”a lot of hard work and preparation goes in so we can get as many employers to really give job seekers an idea of what’s available in the area for them. It gives them an opportunity to talk face to face with an employer.”
Spoto says since many people fill out applications online, they don’t get that face to face contact with an employer, and this job fair allows the employer and potential employee to connect.
“Today gives them the opportunity to come and dress their best, get their resume polished, and come in and meet with the employer, so the employer also gets a sense of who they are as a worker and not just behind a computer.”
Right now, many of the employers are looking for help for the holiday season. Many of the companies brought their company applications for people to fill out. Some companies were even doing on-the-spot interviews. The Presque Isle Career Center offers a variety of services to help prepare for employment.
“Get their resume ready, to practice interviewing techniques. We go over what you should and should not do at a job fair. We have different workshops that are offered to them, to hopefully prepare them so that they can come and become employed.”
Spoto also adds that it is very important for your resume to be up to date and correct. She says a resume is basically a sales document. You are trying to sell yourself and what you have to offer to that employer. If you are unsure if your resume is up to date, or do not have one, Spoto says the Career Center is there to help.
