Some special visitors from overseas have spent the last 2 weeks in the St. John Valley. A group of 16 French exchange students have ventured over from the Western part of France to Fort Kent to stay with host families of students that attend the Fort Kent Community High School.

It’s an exchange that was 2 years in the making,  a group of students from the Fort Kent Community High School went to France last spring, and this time around, a group of 16 students from Western France got a taste of the states.

French Exchange Teacher Tangui Vilboux said,  “We thought we would come to a 100% English speaking part of America and actually we discovered that some people spoke French and a really different type of French, so that was quite surprising.”

The exchange students stayed with host families of students that go to the Fort Kent Community High School; a cultural learning experience for both parties involved.

Host Student Lance Jaydreau said, “I think it’s experiencing the different cultures, like showing him something new in our culture and then he’s just like.”

French Exchange student  Sarah Aubrycaillot said, “Her family was very nice and we shared many good moments.”

Having the exchange students around also gave students at the High School that study French a chance to brush up on the language.

French Instructor at the Fort Kent Community High School Robert Daigle said,  “You can’t get better than having live text books walking around in the halls with you.”

From the classroom to the great outdoors, the French Exchange students got a good glimpse at American life and all that the Fort Kent community has to offer.

The French Exchange students will make one last stop in Quebec City where they will get a guided tour before they head back to France on Monday. A group of students from the Fort Kent Community High School will travel to France again this March.
