Once again the United Way of Aroostook is going to be helping folks in the County with filing their taxes. The United Way has been involved with tax preparations for the past couple of years in collaboration with AARP.
It’s free and available to anyone with with an individual or combined income of 51 thousand dollars or less. The United Way of Aroostook along with AARP is offering Free tax prep services.
Executive Director of United Way of Aroostook Claudia Stevens says, “this year kind of has a little bit of a different twist”
Here’s what’s different…The IRS has added the property tax fairness credit. Stevens says it’s what used to be called the circuit breaker program where you get a property tax or rent reimbursment after you fill out a form.
Sandra Bartley, the Cash Coalition Director says, “this year they have to fill out a 1040 Maine to get their rebate.”
Because the property tax fairness credit is new, Stevens not only wants people getting their taxes done to be aware of it, she also wants them to get the reimbursment.
Stevens, “we want to make sure that people who are eligible and deserve to get that credit are going to get so we’re going to be doing those taxes for people at no cost.”
Bartley says this is especially important for seniors…”even though they’re on social security, we will still do the simple 1040 for the irs, that information will go forward on to the state, and we will fill out the form that needs to be completed for them to get their refund.”
Free tax prep services will begin February 1st in Fort Kent, and throughout the month in Central and Southern Aroostook as well to help as many people.
