Multiple agencies in Aroostook county are turning to the public for ideas on how to keep people in the county or bring them back to the county.

Opportunities Aroostook. That’s the name of the game for an new initiative to improve the work force, and increase the population in Aroostook County. The northern maine development commission is taking on the project along with other agencies like Momentum Aroostook and the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce. Ryan Pelletier of NMDC tells us a new website is in the works that will basically be a hub for connecting businesses, employers, job seekers, and more.

Pelletier says the website already has investors like MMG Insurance, Katahdin Trust, TAMC and Pines Health with at least $13,000 contributed so far. He says they plan to hire a temporary intern to create a social media buzz on the opportunities the website will have. Those opportunities will include information on jobs, culture, and social events. To build the website, Pelletier says Fred Grant from WHOU in Houlton will be doing that.

What these agencies need to know, is what you think.

Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Theresa Fowler, “what are the 20 something’s looking for now, for work environment, for recreation activities, for socialization opportunities, all of those things.”

Pelletier says the website will be big help in advertising the opportunities, and also be used as sort of a passive recruitment method. They encourage folks to sign up for emails and notifications via facebook, twitter, or whatever method you prefer. And the initiative can use some help.

Fowler, “what do the people who live here now need to do to make it more attractive to the 18 to 44 year olds, so we can increase that number in Aroostook County, thereby increasing the population and promoting the economy.”

So now the question is, what would you suggest?  What kind of ideas do you have to help with or promote the opportunities in Aroostook County? Lets start with getting you signed up on facebook if you don’t already have it, and write your comments on this story posted on our wagmtv facebook page.
