More Support for Mike Michaud

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud has more support.  A Maine gay-rights group is backing the Democratic candidate for governor.  They are calling Michaud a stalwart supporter of equality issues. But EqualityMaine’s endorsement of Michaud, who announced in November that he is gay, is coming under fire from independent candidate Eliot Cutler. Cutler says Michaud has voted against equal rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community 19 times while in the Maine Legislature.  This has included measures aimed at prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation in housing and employment. If elected, Michaud will be the first openly gay candidate elected governor. Ali Vander Zanden, EqualityMaine’s political director, says Michaud will stand up for LGBT residents and is the best candidate to move the state forward with policies that will boost the economy and help Maine students.
