Government Shut Down

Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud’s office says that dozens of employees with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Maine have been furloughed due to the federal government shutdown.
Michaud spokesman Ed Gilman said in an email on Tuesday that between 30 and 40 workers in the state have been furloughed.

Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree said 9,800 VA employees were furloughed Tuesday nationwide and that local Veterans Benefits Administration offices, including Maine’s Togus office in Augusta, will be closed to the public. She says offices and employees that provide medical care will remain open.

Gilman says furloughed employees in Maine include those who work in human resources or the analysis of business processes. Employees who process veteran’s benefits claims will remain working.
