A great day at the Houlton Humane Society Tuesday turned into one of shock and dismay. Two donation jars had been placed in the lobby, one for the shelter and another for rabbit rescue. Sometime between 3 and 4 p.m.Tuesday, a thief, or thieves, stole the cash out of both jars. The Humane Society’s executive director, Heather Miller, says the jars weren’t locked or secured because no one had ever stolen from the shelter before. Miller states there were a lot of people in the shelter that day and everything couldn’t be watched all the time. She adds the shelter is hurting for money and every single dollar counts. No figure on the amount of money taken, but Miller remembers at least 3-$20 bills in one jar and at least 2-$20 bills in the other. The shelter employs 4 people and relies on volunteers to help out. Miller filed a report with the Houlton Police Department.
