AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – Former Sen. George Mitchell says he supports the U.S. and other leading nations’ decision to negotiate with and ease sanctions on Iran to give the country the chance to prove it doesn’t want a nuclear weapon.
The former peace envoy to Northern Ireland and the Middle East told The Associated Press on Tuesday that sanctions on Iran have been effective, but that increasing them now won’t be if Russia and China don’t participate.

World powers reached a historic deal with Iran in November for the country to reduce uranium enrichment in exchange for the easing of international sanctions to give some short-term relief to Iran’s crippled economy.

Mitchell, a Maine Democrat, was in Maine Tuesday for the unveiling of his portrait that’ll be hung in the Statehouse.
