Michaud Opposes Massive Cut to Nutrition Program

| September 20, 2013

Representative Mike Michaud has opposed a bill that would deny Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to nearly four million low-income Americans. Michaud says “SNAP helps thousands of Mainers feed their families as they work to get back on their feet. Unfortunately, this bill punishes those who want to work, but cannot find jobs. As our economy struggles to recover, this is exactly the wrong time to cut this critical program. Hunger is a very real and pressing issue in our state and across the country, and these unconscionable cuts threaten to make the situation much worse.”

As a result of the bill’s $40 billion cut to SNAP, an estimated 3.8 million people will lose benefits in 2014, and another 850,000 will see a reduction in benefits. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 248,730 Mainers received SNAP benefits as of June 2013.
