He’s Van Buren’s new head honcho. Dan McClung stepped in as the new town manager of the St. John valley community last week.
“The people have just been great to me..the community is everything I thought it was,” said McClung.
McClung is excited to lead a community that wants to grow. And he’s certainly hitting the ground running with the World Acadian Congress just a month away, but he says the town is prepared.
“The spirit of the town from what I can tell is that everybody’s gonna pitch in and do whatever we need to do..whether it’s giving the speech at the opening breakfast ceremonies or helping to park cars,” said McClung.
He comes to the role with town manager experience in Mars Hill and a background in financial services. McClung says one of his priorities is economic development – in the near future he hopes to get Van Buren certified as a business friendly community.
“I’d really like to see Van Buren get it because it does open some doors for us,” said McClung.
Along with that he wants to work on a 3-5 year strategic plan for the town which would include revitalizing main street, promoting the industrial park, and developing property in town. And he’ll want the community’s input.
“We need business owners, we need to span the gap between some of the younger folks some of the older people in town, to rely on their wisdom and experience but also address the needs of everyone,” said McClung.
Geography and money are what he considers to be the two greatest challenges for the town – but he’s confident that this community can thrive… And he’s going to do whatever he can to make that happen.
