The Maine Winter Sports Center that produced Olympian Russell Currier is losing funding from the philanthropic organization that created it.
The Portland Press Herald said the Libra Foundation will no longer provide funding after April 1. The Portland-based foundation has distributed more than $30 million to the Maine Winter Sports Center over the past 15 years.

Craig Denekas, Libra’s president and CEO, said the skiing center that opened in 1999 and now features world-class facilities in Fort Kent and Presque Isle is ready to stand on its own. The center also supports recreational programs in about 150 communities.

Andy Shepard, president and CEO of the Maine Winter Sports Center, said he’s beginning a $500,000 fundraising campaign to ensure that the center can continue to operate next year
