| December 31, 2013

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – The first woman to serve on Maine’s supreme court, a former U.S. senator and a Nobel Prize-winning physicist are among Mainers who died in 2013. Former U.S. Sen. Bill Hathaway was a World War II prisoner of war and liberal Democrat who upset Maine legend Margaret Chase Smith. Caroline Duby Glassman was the first woman on the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. Kenneth Wilson, who retired to Maine, won a Nobel prize for changing the way physicists think about phase transitions. Others who died in 2013 were Judith Glassman Daniels, a transplant to Maine who blazed a trail for women in the publishing world, and E. Robert Kinney, a Maine native who popularized fish sticks at Gorton’s of Gloucester and went on to be CEO of General Mills.
