It’s a collaboration between a local organic farm and an award winning ale and beer company. The father daughter pair that owns the Aurora Mills and Farm in Linneus is happy to work with the Atlantic Brewing Company out of Bar Harbor to help create a brand new brew!
“They picked us because of our sustainable farming practices not just the oat itself but what we do here and what we stand for, we’re a local family farm..doing organic farming,” says partner Sara Williams.
Williams says the beer company found out about the farm’s oats through the company’s co-op in Bar Harbor. The limited edition beer came out last month, and is named after the farm, Aurora Farm’s Oatmeal Ale.
“We appreciate the name recognition..when we’re obviously, we’re flour..or rolled oats..we’re anonymous a lot so that really helps us with our marketing,” says Sara Williams.
The Williams say so far the reception to this beer has been great, and if you’re looking to try it, you can find it right here at the Courtyard Café in downtown Houlton.
“Everyone in the community has been really supportive about it and really liked it..and I’ve been having dinner there and people come in and ask for it,” said Sara Williams.
The beer is available on draft and the Williams say it could be seasonal, and they do hope it reappears next winter. Matt Williams bought this farm back in 1986, and later made it organic because he wanted a way to run a small acreage profitably.
“It’s healthier for the environment – it fits our long term goals of what we want to see..the land, you know we look at the soil as a living entity,” says Matt.
Sara says going forward, her goals are to increase the farm’s acreage and production, and make it more sustainable than it already is.
