AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – Governor Paul LePage is urging Mainers to stay off the road as dropping temperatures turn standing water into ice.
The National Weather Service says about 1 inch of rain fell throughout Maine on Monday with temperatures reaching 50 degrees in some places. But most of the state will see temperatures drop into the single digits or teens Monday night.
LePage said Mainers should reduce travel Monday night and Tuesday morning. He says if residents have to travel, to consider all roads ice covered.
Ted Talbot, a spokesman for the Maine Department of Transportation, says it is urging residents to be on the lookout for ice, especially at low-lying intersections and bridges.
Maine utilities are reporting more than 1,600 outages due to strong winds and rain.
