PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – Cumberland County Jail officials say inmates used cardboard from toilet paper rolls to jam cell locks, enabling a female inmate to sneak from her cell into the male cellblock for a sexual encounter with an inmate there.
Sheriff Kevin Joyce said Monday that his office is investigating the incident where a female inmate managed to get through four doors and into the cell of a male inmate Saturday.
In addition to the locks being tampered with, the sheriff says corrections officers apparently violated procedure by leaving two other cell block doors unlocked while lunch was served.
Two years ago, a male inmate managed to sneak out of his cell to have sex with a female inmate. That case also involved sabotaged locks and cell block doors that were left unlocked.
