Innocent Woman Arrested

| September 20, 2013

A Chelsea woman was arrested and held in jail for 17 hours without being charged with a crime.  The lawyer for the 35 year old woman says her client is outraged, even though the arrest was legal under Maine law.   The woman was arrested Tuesday as a “material witness” and held pending a court appearance Wednesday by a man charged with beating her with a broom handle and belt in April. District Attorney Maeghan Maloney said authorities arrested her because she was the only witness in the trial of Robert Robinson Jr., and they feared she would not show up voluntarily and charges against Robinson would be dismissed. The woman’s lawyer, Lisa Whittier, called her client’s arrest “outrageous conduct on the part of the state.”
