IAABO Officials Say They Had No Knowledge of Referee’s Illegal Activity

| February 10, 2014

Legasse, Andrew

A representative of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials, or IAABO, says they had no knowledge of referee Andrew Legassie’s illegal activity. Harry Orser, the Rules Interpreter for the IAABO says 21 year old Legassie became a referee for middle school and JV basketball games in 2010.  Orser says that while every official gets a form at the beginning of the year asking if they have been convicted of a felony, the organization had no knowledge of Legassie’s behavior until they were contacted by the school.  Legassie has been charged with two counts of indecent conduct for sending inappropriate pictures of himself to underage girls.  He is accused of ‘friending’ juvenile girls on facebook after meeting them at high schools where he would referee basketball games.  He would then send images of himself performing sexual acts.   Legassie will make an initial appearance in Fort Kent District Court on April 7th. Deputies also seized Legassie’s smartphone, from which it is believed the images were transmitted. Deputies will be investigating further to determine if there are additional victims. No information about the victims will be released.  Orser adds that Legassie only refereed one middle school game for the 2013/2014 basketball season, back in mid December.
