Houlton, ME – 32 year-old Matthew Davis, of Houlton, made his initial appearance via video conference in Houlton today. Davis heard the charges read against him but did not enter a plea. At this time, Davis is being charged with the murders of an Oakfield couple whose bodies were discovered earlier this week.
On Monday September 23rd, Davis was arrested after the bodies of 51 year-old Michael Kitchen and presumably 49 year-old Heidi Pratt were discovered by firefighters responding to a house fire on Oakfield Smyrna Road.
The affidavit released today sheds new light on just what may have taken place in the early morning hours of Monday September 23rd. The affidavit alleges Davis left his home Sunday night in a black wrecker-style flatbed truck. He then went to Katahdin Forest Products where he stole a white Ford Ranger belonging to that company. Davis drove the white truck to Pratt and Kitchen’s residence where he murdered the couple, set both the house and stolen white truck on fire before taking off in a pickup truck that was parked in Kitchen’s garage. The affidavit alleges Davis drove that truck to Richardson Rd. in Island Falls, set that truck on fire and crossed the lake in a kayak. Davis, raided a camp where he stole another vehicle. When Police came in contact with Davis they took him into custody. A k-9 search of the area turned up a wallet containing a picture identification of Michael Kitchen. The affidavit also claims that two firearms, one located inside the Pratt home, and another found in the burned truck on Richardson Lane, both belonged to Davis.
At this point the cause of death of Kitchen and Pratt has not been made official. Davis’ next court date set for February 19th.
