Matthew Davis shows absolutely no emotion as Justice E. Allen Hunter reads off his charges. Davis is charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of a man and woman from Oakfield, whose bodies were discovered earlier this week. The first has been positively identified as 51-year-old Michael Kitchen.

Kitchen is said to have died from multiple gunshot wounds. The second is presumed to be 49-year-old Heidi Pratt. An autopsy on Pratt was scheduled for Wednesday and a positive ID is pending the medical examiner’s results. At this point, a motive is not clear, but an affidavit released revealed more about what exactly may have happened on Monday morning. The affidavit alleges that Davis left his residence Sunday night in a flatbed truck and drove it into a building at Katahdin Forest Products in Oakfield. He then abandoned the vehicle, took a white Ford Ranger that belonged to the company and went to 331 Oakfield Smyrna road – the home of Kitchen and Pratt. Neighbors told police they woke up before five in the morning to the sound of gunshots.

According to the affidavit, Davis murdered the couple, and then set the house and the stolen pickup truck on fire. He then left the house in another pickup that belonged to the Robert Kitchen and Sons Garage, drove that through the couple’s garage, to 42 Richardson Road in Island Falls, and set that on fire. He then took a kayak and crossed the lake, and broke into a nearby camp, on the Beaver Dam Point road, where he stole a vehicle. Police caught up with him on that road, where they conducted a k-9 search and found a wallet with a photo ID belonging to Michael Kitchen.
According to the affidavit, two weapons were recovered, one in the burnt truck on Richardson Road, the other lying across the body of Kitchen. Both weapons are registered to Davis. Today in court, Davis did not enter a plea. He’s currently being held at the Aroostook County jail.
