The sign in the window of this empty storefront in Houlton’s Market Square reads FOR RENT. There are several empty storefronts open and available…just waiting for new businesses to move in. It’s a CHIEF CONCERN for Police Chief Butch Asselin, Houlton’s Interim Town Manager. He says groups like Houlton Chamber of Commerce and the Southern Aroostook Development Corporation are aggressively working on getting more businesses in Houlton with a new business support program.
“Its to provide additional resources for people that want to start new businesses in town you have people you can count on rely on build to help you if you have any questions its like a mentoring thing,” says Asselin.
Asselin’s been on the job as interim town manager for about two months. Its been a learn as you go experience for sure.
“My day is a little bit longer my wife doesn’t see me as much as she would like at least that’s what she’s saying.”
But its working out well, thanks to creative time management and help from both the town staff and the police department. Its also working out well for the community. Asselin says major undertakings are in the works right now to bring a new business to Houlton that would add 16 new jobs to the area.
Asselin says its always a goal of municipal leaders to increase economic development, and the same goes for him. What’s been a tremendous help he says is having the support of the business community.
Asselin says a search for a permanent replacement is ongoing. In the meantime wearing multiple hats, he has multiple things to get done. But he’s doing so because…
Asselin adds “I enjoy living up here I couldn’t think of a better place to be and this is my way of giving back I suppose.”
