The New Maliseet Athletic Field was unveiled earlier today. The High School team is now on the field taking on Old Town in a Sub varsity game. Earlier this afternoon officials and players talked about the importance of the field.
Brian Reynolds coach; We are very excited to playing at home. I am very excited to be playing on on Tribal land. Very thankful for the Council for our community, to have this project go through and have a regulation football field to play on.”
Players, school officials and dignitaries were on hand for the blessing of the field at 3pm on Monday afternoon and they were excited to finally play a game later in the afternoon on the new turf
James Jones:” We have been waiting a long time and Coach Brian has put in a lot of time in and a lot of other people have put work in to make this a success. We are really excited to play on our home field.
Nick Hagan “It’s very important I have been waiting to play here for a long time and it’s finally come.”
Mike Hammer ” It’s exciting for the community for the kids we continue to get involved in the program. Hopefully will help build the program. For this all to come together is fabulous.”
The field was built Houlton Band of Maliseet land and Tribal Chief Brenda Commander happy to see the finished project
” Brenda Commander;” This is so exciting it’s been a goal and a dream for many years. It’s something we had been persistent about. We had a lot of support of the Tribal Community and the Tribal Council”
Also announced today the second phase of the project has been funded
Rosa McNally” We just found out from HUD that we have been awarded the grant to have lights put in so we are looking forward to having that construction done in the spring.
