AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – Groups helping Mainers sign up for insurance on the exchange under the federal health overhaul say they’re busy ahead of the looming coverage deadlines.
For most states, the deadline to sign up on the exchange for coverage that kicks in on Jan. 1 was Monday. But federal officials have extended that deadline through Tuesday.
Maine Health Community Options, one of the two insurers offering coverage in Maine, announced last week that it’s giving residents until Dec. 31 to sign up for coverage that begins Jan. 1.
The federal government says roughly 1,480 Mainers picked a plan on the exchange last month, up from about 270 in October. In total, about 1,750 Mainers have enrolled in the exchange, a key component of President Barack Obama’s health care law.
