AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – A new federal report finds that plans offered on Maine’s health insurance exchange will cost among the highest in the country.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services report released Wednesday provides a glimpse into the rates that will be offered when the marketplaces under the federal health care overhaul open for enrollment next week.
Maine residents will pay an average of $403 a month for a mid-range insurance plan before tax credits. That’s higher than the national average of $328.
Premiums will vary depending on income, family size and residence.
The federal report finds that premiums tend to be higher in states where fewer insurers are offering coverage. Two companies, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and Maine Community Health Options, are offering plans on Maine’s federally-run exchange.
