BATH, Maine (AP) – Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told shipbuilders and sailors that the largest destroyer ever built by the Navy will be an important asset in the Asia-Pacific region.
Speaking to a crowd of several hundred, he said the 610-foot Zumwalt that is under construction “represents the cutting edge of our naval capabilities.”
Hagel says it’s significant that the ship will be based in San Diego after it joins the fleet in 2016. He says there it will be an important asset as the United States shifts its focus to the pacific.
Hagel toured the newest destroyer, the stealthy DDG-1000, which will be christened this spring.
The warship was originally designed for shore bombardment and features two 155mm guns that fire rocket-propelled warheads, along with missiles and other weapons.
