It’s May first and normally golf courses are getting very close to opening for the season. Course opening vary from year to year. Mars Hill Country Club is normally one of the first courses to open.

McQuade:”Our earliest opening was in 2010 I believe we opened all 18 holes with carts April 16th our latest opening for the old nine would be May 6th.

Madore:”The earliest we have ever opened was April 18th or 19th a couple of years ago when we had those high temperatures in March. I think the latest we ever opened was around May 16th or 17th.

Leitch:”The earliest I ever remember opening here was the 23rd of Aprill. and in fact last year we opened on the 8th of May. This year I don’t expect it to be any later.”

The pro shops are stocked and everyone is ready for the start of the new season. Members have been paying their dues and are now ready to hit the links. Madore and McQuade agree that one weekend gets everyone ready to golf.

Madore:” Until the so called Masters Weekend and even though there is a lot of snow on the ground in April that is when they get the fever to play golf around here.”

McQuade:” Normally when the Masters starts everyone gets ready coming out looking things over. This year we were still blanketed in snow.”

Grounds crews are battling the wet and cold conditions and doing what they can around the course and just like the line in ” Field of Dreams” Build it and they will come. The mantra for golf courses managers is dry out and warm up and they will come.

Leitch:” There will be traffic people are anxious. The phone isn’t ringing off the hook because people realize how lousy the weather is. It has been cold and wet, but as soon as the sun pops out and the temperature gets above 50 degrees you will see things really pick up.”
