Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic across the Country. And an effort to combat that epidemic here in the County was held at the University of Maine at Presque Isle over the weekend called “Fit and Fun Day.” Kids from ages 5 to 11 participated.
UMPI Student Coordinator Aaron Hutchins said, “Have students engage in wellness and fitness and just get them motivated and have fun and be active.”
Fit and Fun Day is made possible by UMPI students that study Physical Education, that planned the whole event from start to finish.
UMPI Professor of Physical Education Chris Standefer said, “This is a service learning project that we have in our senior seminar Organization administration class.”
UMPI Student Jordan Duffy said, “It’s great for us as well it gives us experience teaching in the field and get acquainted with the kids as well.”
It’s an effort to get kids moving and off the couch. Saturday’s Fit and Fun Day was the 18th semi-annual event of it’s kind held at UMPI. The next one will be held this upcoming Spring.
